I love the progression of Peter’s journey, his struggle, and his willingness to get back up again after failure and denial. Jesus’s restoration of Peter after His resurrection is so intimate.

Peter had seen the risen Messiah, even shared a room with Him (imagine the conviction you’d feel making eye contact after denying Him!), and didn’t fall on his knees in repentance asking for forgiveness. No—instead, he went back to what was familiar, his life of fishing, and notice, he didn’t go alone (Read John 21). Some of the other disciples came with him, and it was fruitless—they caught nothing!

When we don’t do the work of healing and recovery, repentance and renewal, we go back to what is familiar. Like Peter, we often don’t go alone—others are watching and following us—and it’s fruitless because our true restoration is in Jesus! We will continue to go back to what is familiar after failure because we haven’t chosen to jump out of the boat, eat breakfast with Jesus, and allow Him to restore us like only He can. (Read the whole of John 21).

Peter could’ve stayed in the boat, ashamed of his choices, and been embarrassed for catching nothing in his efforts to fish, the only trade he ever knew before he left everything to follow the Rabbi. But he humbled himself, took off his outer garment, ran to shore, and let Jesus speak the truth in love to him.

Two of my favorite passages in the book of Acts say, “In those days Peter stood up among the brother and sisters” (1:15 CSB) and “Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them . . .” (2:14 CSB). The only thing that gave Peter the dignity to stand up and lead after public denial and failure was the restoring power of Jesus. Peter stood up and led the charge in choosing Matthias, the new apostle, to replace Judas. And he also preached the first sermon after Pentecost, calling thousands to repentance, seeing “about three thousand” repent, be baptized, and be added to the number of saints (2:41). Imagine he didn’t get out of that boat. Imagine he didn’t unashamedly run to Jesus. Imagine he didn’t allow himself to be corrected, loved, and restored. But he did. And then he stood up—and so can you.

How? Don’t wait. We stir up what’s already within us by choice…

- Thank God for the gifts He’s 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 placed within you to expand His Kingdom.
- Begin to pray out loud, not in your head or in a journal… Begin to actively stir what’s within you. Lay your hands on your head and heart if you need to!
- Give God every room and space you’re in today, and be obedient when He wants to use what’s within you to bless others.

”That is why I remind you to fan into flame the gracious gift of God, [that inner fire—the special endowment] which is in you through the laying on of my hands [with those of the elders at your ordination]. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control].“
